At one point in the seventies, then-Sen. Dennis Carpenter unsuccessfully ran for the US Senate. He had Gov. Reagan appear at a big fundraiser in Long Beach, which was picketed by anti-war protesters. Reagan went in a side door and avoided the demonstraters, but in his remarks, he said, “I saw kids that had signs that said, ‘Make love, not war’ and I doubt they could do either.”
