A Brief Explanation
(Editor’s Note: On Thanksgiving 2008, the chief correspondent of California’s Capitol began reviewing restaurants for the Sacramento News & Review, the respected weekly paper of the City of Trees. As these reviews demonstrate, the apparent criteria for this hiring was an unprecedented lack of restaurant reviewing experience. That abject track record may well be one of the reasons my counterparts at the News & Review suggested the chief correspondent take someone interesting with him.
What follow are the initial drafts filed by the correspondent, unimproved by the polishing of his News & Review editors. The editor-enhanced versions can be found at www.newsreview.com/sacramento/Home. Lucky he has a day job, such as it is.)

Resources
Greg,
One of my first writing jobs (for pay) was to write restaurant reviews for the News & Review when it first came to town in the ’80s. I had a column, “the Accidental Gourmet” and had fun with it until I proved to be not politically correct enough and thought Dawson’s was ok even though it wasn’t unionized. Go figure. Good luck with the editorial staff!
