His ability to vote for a tax if he was convinced it was needed and conviction to vote and work against policy that no matter how politically correct the issue might be if he didn\’t feel was in the best interest of California.

While I was Director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (circa 1980), Bob once called me to his office to complain that because there was no explicit legislative language to the contrary, it was illegal for a patron to remove a partially consumed bottle of wine from a restaurant. Flummoxed, I agreed. With me in tow, Bob introduced legislation that allowed patrons to take home partially consumed bottles. We called it the Beverly Bag Bill (B&P Code Sec. 23396.5). A tremendous guy ; a tremendous loss.

The old guard is slowly leaving us... and with what?
Front page Bee story about the pro tem being a "decent" man?
Term limits is a joke. Prop 9 is a joke.
We're being strangled. Maddy and Beverly are just two examples of leaders that could have shown us the right path.
Now we're left with Hollywood Arnold who uses Jack Sparrow's ideological compass and a bunch wingers in the Legislature.
We're screwed...

Like Jim, I have many fond memories of Bob, from his grace and wit of running the Senate floor, his ability to vote for a tax if he was convinced it was needed and conviction to vote and work against policy that no matter how politically correct the issue might be if he didn\'t feel was in the best interest of California.

Never in over 20 years did I presume to think that I knew where the Senator was before I spoke with him about a vote and often I was disappointed but he was always told you where he was and why.

He would be insulted by a vote card, his vote was his and his only.

I\'m honored to have known Bob.

I want to clear up something Sen. Beverly once said that has been often misquoted. But I was there and heard him. A group of legislators and some business types were on a fact-finding trip in Europe. Okay, it was junket.

We were eating in a very posh and highly-rated restaurant in Brussels and several of the members were concerned about what was being written about the trip back in the states and what they would say they were doing.

Without missing a beat and after a long draw on his vodka, Bob said plainly, "Just tell them you didn't go, but you paid your own way." With Bob's passing, I'm proud to say I was with him in Belgium in 1992.

Lobbyists who were in Sacramento prior to term limits often use Senators Beverly and Maddy as two of the legislators that more than most displayed a genuine sense of honesty, integrity and a willingness to "reach across the aisle" to get things done. If you had a chance to spend time with them together, it was a thing of beauty.

I remember a night at Fat's. Bill Leonard had introduced a bill in the Senate to reduce the 1.0 intoxication rate to .08 and Bob remarked in that Carson-type style that he wakes up with a .08. Another classic.

Beverly and Maddy are once again at the corner both in some better place and we are better off for knowing them. We'll miss you.
