Californians Now Number More Than 38 Million
California grew by 332,000 people between July 1, 2012 and July 1, 2013 and now has more than 38.2 million residents, according to population estimates released December 12 by the Department of Finance.
It’s the biggest numeric gain and percentage gain – nearly 1 percent – since 2004.
Eighty percent of the increase comes from births.    Read more »
Slight Population Growth in 2012, Brown Administration Reports
SACRAMENTO— California’s population grew by almost 298,000 residents in 2012 to 37,966,000 as of January 1, 2013, according to a population report released today by the Department of Finance.
The report shows preliminary January 2013, as well as revised January 2012, population data for cities. Highlights include:

SACRAMENTO – California’s population grew by 256,000 between July 1, 2011 and July 1, 2012 to total more than 37.8 million persons, according to official population estimates released today by Gov. Jerry Brown’s Department of Finance. The current growth rate of 0.7 percent is about the same as last year’s population growth, and continues the pattern of modest growth rates over the past few years.    Read more »

State Schools Chief Announces More Than 10,000 Students Earn New “State Seal of Biliteracy”
SACRAMENTO—More than 10,000 graduating high school students across California have earned the first state recognition in the nation for achieving proficiency in multiple languages, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced July 5.
The “State Seal of Biliteracy” was established by Assembly Bill 815 — authored by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, a Santa Monica Democrat — to recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages in addition to English.    Read more »
California’s Population is Now Almost 37.7 million
California’s population grew by almost 251,000 new residents in 2011 – a 0.7- percent growth rate – to total 37,679,000 as of this January 1st, according to a new population report released May 1 by the Department of Finance.
The City of Los Angeles, California’s largest city, has a population of 3,825,297.    Read more »

The Graying of California
“The state should see more than a 50 percent increase in the population over age 65” between now and 2020, according to the Legislative Analyst’s California Facts for 2011.
Some 10,000 Baby Boomers are turning 65 every day — and will continue to do so for 19 years.
About 4.4 million Californians are over 65, 11.5 percent of the population.    Read more »

California’s population grew less than one percent between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011 to total more than 37.5 million persons, according to official population estimates released today by Gov. Jerry Brown’s Department of Finance.
This represents 260,000 new residents during the fiscal year and continues the pattern of modest growth rates over the past few years.    Read more »
Some Interesting Statistics About California’s Workforce
More than 16.5 million Californians over the age of 16 work, according to the US Census Bureau.
Just over 2 million Californians are unemployed, according to the 2009 American Community Survey conducted by the federal government. That translates to 11.3 percent of the workforce – a percentage point lower than the unemployment rate calculated by the state.    Read more »
