Democratic Voter Alert: There Are More Options Than Jerry

Democratic Voter Alert: There Are More Options Than Jerry

Like GOP voters in the Republican primary for governor, Democrats have many more options to choose from than their most visible gubernatorial candidate, Attorney General Jerry Brown.

Counting Brown, there are seven Democratic candidates for governor. There are also seven GOP contenders, three Peace & Freedom candidates, two American Independents, two Green Party candidates and one Libertarian for a total field of 23.    Read more »

GOP Voters: There Are Other Choices Besides Meg and Steve

From the relentless carpet-bombing of television ads and mailers, the impression California Republicans would get is that their only choices for governor on June 8 are former eBay executive Meg Whitman and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

They’re just two of eight candidates vying for the GOP nomination. Unlike Whitman, Bill Chambers, Douglas Hughes, Ken Miller, Larry Naritelli, Robert Newman and David Tully-Smith have not donated nearly $70 million of their own money to trumpet their candidacies.    Read more »

Explore This Fascinating and Disingenuous Campaign Mailer

(Editor’s Note: Above is the cover of one of the more interesting mailers of the June 2010 primary election. At first blush, a reader wonders exactly how big an audience Ms. Cranch is appealing to. The words “union” and “Republican” are not commonly used in conjunction. It’s a bigger audience than the reader might assume.    Read more »

Carpet-Bombing Continues — Campaign Consultants Rejoice

Carpet-Bombing Continues — Campaign Consultants Rejoice

(Editor’s Note: A review on the Secretary of State’s website of the late and $5,000 or more contributions received by the “Yes on 16/ Californians to Protect Our Right to Vote” campaign shows that Pacific Gas & Electric has, so far, donated $50.6 million. Logic suggests such an investment by the investor-owned utility would  likely be made for self-interest rather than a selfless desire to protect voters from profligate decisions by their locally elected representatives.    Read more »

When Isn’t A Politician Not a Representative and Vice Versa

(Editor’s Note: Merriam-Webster’s top three definitions of a politician are, in descending order:

“A person experienced in the art or science of government, especially one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government.”

“A person engaged in party politics as a profession.” And:

“A person primarily interested in political office for selfish or other narrow, usually short-sighted, reasons.”    Read more »

But First, Another Word from Our Sponsor, Mercury Insurance

(Editor’s Note: This mailer and a bevy of television ads are brought to California voters by Mercury General Corporation, an auto insurer, which has long sought the change in law Proposition 17 would make. Mercury is the only entity listed on the Secretary of State’s website which has given the “yes” campaign contributions of $5,000 or more.     Read more »

‘Tis the Season — The Steady Barrage of Slate Mailers Begins

(Editor’s Note: The asterisk next to a candidate’s name or a ballot proposition indicates they have paid California Voter Guide of Torrance California to be recommended on the mailer. That being the case, U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina, Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado, Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley, candidate for Attorney General, and Assemblyman Mike Villines, running for insurance commissioner, each paid more since their photographs appear on both the cover and the inside of the mailer.    Read more »
